Health Awareness Residentials
20 young people from ethnic minority backgrounds learnt about health, fitness and general well being. They wrote, produced and filmed 'adverts' to promote healthy living, including topics such as; stop smoking, diabetes, asthma, obesity, healthy living and bully. This took place during a 3-day residential in Hinehead, Guildford. The programme incorporated various different activities including challenge courses, trapeze, zip wire, abseiling amongst others. A DVD of the residential was produced incorporating the adverts made by the young people and distributed as a health awareness resource amongst the community.
The programme was designed to introduce young people to a whole host of new experiences that they may never otherwise have the chance to participate in. It was tailor-made to provide an excellent platform for personal and social development and a chance to develop skills which can often remain hidden. The project:
- Increased knowledge of health issues and disseminated that information into the community.
- Developed a positive attitude to physical activity in order to promote a healthy lifestyle.
- Developed self-respect and self-discipline.
- Raised self-esteem and self-confidence.
- Helped address disaffection.
- Participants developed the ability to care for and accept the support of others and make satisfying relationships.
- Taught tolerance and respect for other people.
